Course Description: Project Level 1 - Creating a Project

This course is the first in a series of two courses designed for individuals who will use Microsoft Office Project Professional as a tool to assist them in managing projects. The topics in this course cover the critical skills necessary to create and modify a project plan file that contains tasks, resources, and resource assignments.

Prerequisites: Students should have a good understanding of project management concepts and be familiar with project management terminology such as Gantt Chart, task, critical path, and resource.

Benefits: You will create a project plan file containing tasks, organise these tasks in a work breakdown structure containing task relationships, create and assign resources, and finalise the project to implement the project plan.

Target student: This course is designed for a person who has an understanding of project management concepts, who is responsible for creating and modifying project plans, and who needs a tool to manage those project plans.

Training can be delivered in our training centre in Guildford, Surrey or at your office.

Project Level 1 - Creating a Project / Introduction

 

Lesson 1: Project Management Concepts

Overview to explain the functionality of Microsoft Project.

Lesson 2: Terminology

  • Critical Path Analysis

  • Free Slack

  • Total Slack

  • Scheduling Methods

  • Duration-Work-Units

  • Milestones

  • Task Relationships

  • Lead and Lag times

 Lesson 3: Software Overview

  • The structure of Microsoft Project.

 Lesson 4: Create a Timeline Project

  • Produce a basic project plan showing a detailed sequence of events. This initial project will reinforce the topics covered in Lesson 2.

 Lesson 5: Resources

  • The key to using Microsoft Project to its full potential is understanding the relationship between resources and work. Resources are introduced to the case study project and a detailed investigation is then made reviewing how these resources impact the project plan.

 Lesson 6: Create a Resource Driven Project

  • Produce a project plan driven by the availability of the resources and the estimated work required.
