Pitman Training
in national press - 'The Times' (2 June 2010)
The Managing Director of Pitman Training
Group, Claire Lister was featured in a special supplement in 'The Times'
on 2 June 2010. The 8 page supplement introduced the nationally
recognised 'PA of the Year' competition. Under a heading called
"How to get ahead" Pitman Training was mentioned as ".....a name
synonymous with traditional secretarial training education and is well
respected...." Claire went on to say that "Courses can be studied
full or part time... all offer an end-of-course test as a proof of
ability and achievement". The article ended with the comment "The
Pitman Executive PA Diploma .... will provide more than sufficient
skills to achieve this objective".
What more proof do you need of the
quality and recognition our courses provide?
Effects of
Further Education cutbacks start to be seen
We
at Pitman Training Guildford are noticing a significant rise in enquiries
and new students for our bookkeeping, Sage and computer courses.
They tell us that courses in these subjects at some local further
education colleges have been either reduced or even cancelled as a
result of funding restraints. As a commercial provider of such
courses we are not affected by such cutbacks therefore we can assure all
potential students that our courses are continuing to run. In
addition, unlike conventional colleges our courses can be studied at
times to suit the student and can begin at any time.
April 2010
- New 'Time to Train' Legislation come into force
April 2010 sees the introduction of an
important piece of employment legislation, which will allow employees
the right to request time off to train. The scheme, which will cover all
businesses by April 2011, provides an employee with the right to make a
request for time off work for the purpose of training.
From April 2010,
businesses with 250 or more employees must follow the scheme. It will
extend to businesses of all sizes in April 2011. Only those
employees who have worked for you continuously for at least 26 weeks
will be eligible to make a request. An employee can request any training
that they believe will make them more effective and productive in their
job. This can include courses that result in a recognised qualification
and shorter non-accredited training sessions.

It's
official - John Humphreys of the BBC prefers Pitman!
In an article on the BBC's web site
John Humphreys says that he still uses the Pitman shorthand that he
learned as a junior journalist many years ago.
Now, the National Council for the
Training of Journalists (NCTJ) is campaigning to make it clear that
shorthand is still a vital part of the journalists' toolbox. "Strangely,
its more necessary than ever," says Kim Fletcher, chairman of the NCTJ.

Distance
learning course completion rates warning
Many of our students tell us that they
had started, but failed to complete a 'distance learning course' before
joining us. At first sight, a distance learning course sounds like
an easy, flexible and cheaper learning option - you study when you want
and at home. However, when one considers that course completion or
success rates are below 20% that means that four out of five students
have, in effect, wasted their money. Our course completion/success
rate is well over 90% which means that if you start one of our courses,
barring unforeseen events, you should complete and pass it. This
is a testament to the quality of the learning environment, materials and
support you will receive while you study with us. Therefore if you
are considering a course always ask what the course completion or
success rate is.

The Learning
Skills Council (LSC) has just released a report saying that nearly half the
country’s workforce say the current economic climate has made them think
about training or learning a new skill.
The survey identifies the current economic
problems to be the number one cause of insecurity in the workplace (42 per
cent); it also demonstrates that the current situation is inspiring many
people to rethink their career paths in a positive way, with over three
quarters of respondents (77 per cent) recognising the room for improvement
in their skill levels and indicating a willingness to seek advice about
improving their skill base. Two thirds of workers actually stated they felt
learning a new skill would help make them feel happier and more secure in
their jobs (62 per cent). Pitman Training Guildford offers a wide
range of IT and office skills courses that can be studied outside work time.
These can significantly improve skills levels and employability in uncertain
times such as these.
